Conneaut police ready to tackle football fans who break parking laws

CONNEAUT — Police in Conneaut are ready to throw a yellow flag, and hand out some tickets, to football fans who violate the town’s parking laws.

After two consecutive weekends of observing poor parking practices, officers are ready to respond on Friday night, when the Spartans host Pymatuning Valley High School, said Police Chief Charles Burlingham.

“We will be issuing citations,” he said Tuesday.

People going to the stadium for games and activities the past two weeks have been breaking a variety of parking laws, Burlingham said.

“They was parking in front of hydrants, there was parking facing the wrong way,” he said. “(Violations) were everywhere.”

No more, police said. Officers will be devoting lots of time Friday — and every time the stadium is in use — to ensuring vehicles and properly and safely parked, Burlingham said.

“I have sent emails to all the officers (on duty Friday night) that if they aren’t on a call they had better be up (at the stadium) writing tickets,” he said.

Offenders could be found on several side streets in the vicinity of the stadium, which sits at the corner of Maple and Stadium avenues, Burlingham said. At the start of the Spartans’ home season, school officials announced football fans could use the General Electric parking lot at the west end of the long-closed factory. However, Burlingham said few motorists took advantage of the offer last weekend.

“I only counted 19 (vehicles) in the GE lot on Friday,” he said.
