Grand Valley special event will help fight cancer and diabetes

ORWELL — Pink shirts were the fashion statement of the evening Monday as the Grand Valley soccer team took to the field to fight cancer and diabetes.

The co-ed soccer game with Bloomfield was the sight for the special event on a chilly, clear night at the Grand Valley Stadium.

Holly Hill, the Grand Valley soccer coach, decided to sponsor the game because several relatives of team members are fighting, or have fought, cancer. She also has a relative with diabetes so they decided to raise money for both diseases, she said.

“I had no idea they were doing anything with diabetes and my sister is a type one diabetic so I am more than willing to stand outside,” said Victoria Midgett, who was taking donations at the bake sale table at the soccer game.

The soccer players provided baked goods for the bake sale and a youth kick-a-thon was staged after the game to raise funds to fight the two dreaded diseases.

Hill said they all sponsored a 50-50 raffle. “They exceeded my expectation. They brought in tons of food,” she said.

“Hopefully it will be the first annual (event),” Hill said.

The event was especially exciting for Bailey Hill, who plays soccer for the Mustangs. “It is an emotional thing. It feels really good (helping fight the diseases),” she said.

Bailey Hill, whose cousin Luke has cancer, said she hopes the money will help find a cure for the diseases because it is so tough on the individuals that have to fight for their lives.

During the kick-a-thon dozens of pee wee soccer players paid a dollar for a shot on goal while a high school player was playing goalie.

A lot of youngsters scored a goal and were all smiles as they left the field.

The event was modeled after a national campaign that is entitled Play for the Cure.
