Grand Valley Public Library launches new Facebook app

ORWELL — The Grand Valley Public Library is taking social networking to the next level with the launch of a new Facebook application.

The new app went live earlier this week and allows library patrons to access the library’s catalog from within Facebook, said Library Director Andrew Davis.

The library recently migrated to the SEO (Serving Every Ohioan) Consortium and the new app is something all libraries in the consortium are able to do through their automation system, he said.

Davis said the Facebook app has been available for a few months and slowly has been rolling out to all the libraries in the consortium. There are 89 libraries in the consortium with 202 locations. It is a statewide consortium in 46 counties throughout the state.

Davis said the migration to the SEO Consortium has been an extremely positive endeavor for the library and the Facebook app will make it that much better.

Grand Valley Library patrons are able to use their library cards at any of the 202 library locations within the consortium as well as utilize an interlibrary loan system. The Facebook app makes it that much easier, Davis said.

When patrons access the app, it will first search the Grand Valley Library’s catalog as well as the Grand Valley High School catalog, if the item is not found, it will then search the other libraries in the consortium. Patrons can then place the item on hold if it is at the Grand Valley Library or check it out from another library and it will be sent to Grand Valley, he said.

Patrons will even receive an e-mail or text message on their cell phone when the item arrives, Davis said.

Patrons can also pay their library fines from within the app with a credit card and renew items they have checked out.

Since the Grand Valley Library migrated to the SEO Consortium, it took with it the Grand Valley High School Library. Now Grand Valley High School students have access to all the same benefits as Grand Valley Library patrons.

“Students have their own high school cards but can request books from all the libraries in the consortium,” he said.

Davis said students also have access to E-books and music and video downloads.

“This has been a huge, wonderful thing,” he said of making the move to the SEO Consortium. “We were a little nervous but since we have migrated it has been fantastic.”

Davis said the library is still working out a few kinks but the support system at SEO has been fantastic.

The Grand Valley Public Library celebrated its 110th anniversary Sept. 15 and Davis said the launch of the Facebook app couldn’t have come at a better time.
