Cleveland Clinic layoffs will not affect ACMC employees

ASHTABULA — Workforce cuts at the Cleveland Clinic will not directly affect Ashtabula County Medical Center, which is affiliated with the larger hospital.

“ACMC al-ready has been taking costs out of our healthcare system,” said Mike Hab-owski, president and CEO of ACMC. “We will continue to focus on providing the highest quality care to our patients in the most efficient   and cost-effective manner.”

The Cleve-land Clinic told its 42,000 em-ployees Wed-nesday there would be layoffs and offers of early retirement in an attempt to cut $330 million from the 2014 budget.

The 3,000 employees who are eligible for early retirement will receive information by October, Eileen Sheil, clinic spokeswoman, said.

“I don’t know a hospital that isn’t looking  at cutting  costs,” she said.

“To prepare for healthcare reform, the Cleveland Clinic is transforming the way care is delivered to patients.”

Throughout the past several years, the clinic has had an ongoing focus on driving efficiencies, lowering costs, reducing duplication in services and enhancing quality to make healthcare affordable to patients, she said.

“Through these changing times, we are focused on providing the highest quality of care to our patients in the most efficient and cost-effective manner,” Sheil said.

The number of layoffs is not known at this time, she said.

That figure will depend on how much savings individual departments can make with other reductions.

Personnel takes up about 60 percent of the clinic’s budget. There’s now a stricter review of vacant positions, she said.

She attributed some of the reductions to the changes in health care across the country. Cleveland Clinic is ranked as one of the top hospitals in America by U.S. News & World Report (2013).
