ADDA planning session for streetscape open to public

ASHTABULA — The Ashtabula Downtown Dev-elopment Association is hosting a planning session to help develop a Street-scape for Main Avenue at 5 p.m. Monday at Casa Capelli’s.

Guest James McKnight, a landscape architect from McKnight Associates, wants citizens’ input for setting goals. The meeting is open to the public.

A social hour will take place from 5 to 6 p.m. followed by a public input session from 6 to 8 p.m. Anyone wishing to attend should call Oscar Tomasio at 440-992-3700 by Sat-urday, or send an email to downtownashtabula@outlook.com.

A streetscape is defined as “the visual elements of a street, including the road, adjoining buildings, street furniture, trees and open spaces, etc., that combine to form the street's character.”

McKnight Associates, Ltd., is a Cleveland-based firm, headed by James McKnight, that recently designed a streetscape for the City of Hudson. Other projects have included:

• Superior Avenue, Cleveland, streetscape;

• Perk Park, Cleveland;

• Broadway Avenue in Cleveland’s Slavic Village;

• Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority. RTA Median Enhancements-Shaker Square to Coventry Station, and

• Shaker Heights Streetscape Plan.

“Working with the ADDA and the City of Ashtabula, we will develop a conceptual design and cost estimate for implementation so that the ADDA and the city can apply for grants and other sources of funds,” McKnight said.

At the Sept. 23rd planning meeting, McKnight will be seeking input to setting goals, reaction to current conditions and feedback on choice of planters and lighting.

The Main Avenue streetscape is part of the ADDA’s 2013 action plan.

“This planning session is an opportunity for the community to express their ideas and visions for a downtown look that is both visually pleasing and functional for traffic and pedestrians,” said Lynda Annick, ADDA president. “I hope that many of the downtown business and property owners, as well as people from all sectors of the community, will take advantage of this opportunity to help plan for a vibrant downtown.”

Ultimately McKnight will prepare a sketch plan of the proposed traffic, parking and streetscape improvements to illustrate the design concept, including a series of sections, elevations or sketches to explain intent. The plan will be reviewed and refined as necessary. Finally, based upon unit costs and proposed sketch plan for the design improvements, a cost analysis will be developed.

Anyone unable to attend the planning session can send their ideas and suggestions to the ADDA at P.O. Box 362, Ashtabula, OH 44005, or to the ADDA’s website, www.downtownashtabula.com  (go to “About Us” and click on “contact us”).
