Community shows support for 12th annual Walk for the Cure

GENEVA — Breast cancer survivors and their supporters hit the pavement Sunday at Geneva High School for the 12th annual Walk for the Cure.

The two-mile walk began at 2 p.m., following a survivor ceremony, a Jazzercise demonstration, and a balloon launch to honor those affected by breast cancer.

There were “at least a couple hundred people” in attendance, according to volunteer committee member, Rosemary Scardino. “We’ve had more walk-ins this year than any other year,” she said. “We’re almost out of shirts.”

Registrants came from as far as Euclid and Tallmadge, Scardino said.

Commemorative T-shirts were available to the first 300 registrants. Survivors registered free and received a t-shirt and a gift bag, while other supporters paid a $15 registration fee.

“The walk gets bigger every year and we’re seeing more survivors, so that tells us that education and awareness really do help,” said Scardino.

Breast cancer survivor, Connie Summers from Andover, has been participating in the walk for the past three years, she said. “I like this; it’s very nice,” she said. “I’m almost an eight-year survivor... Eight years in November.”

“I came out in support of my sister and other relatives that have breast cancer,” said Summers’ sister, Laurie Warren.

All proceeds from the walk benefit breast cancer programs, education, and research, and the walk is sponsored by University Hospitals Conneaut and Geneva Medical Centers.

While this is the twelfth annual Walk for the Cure, it is the eleventh year it has been held at Geneva High School.
