Family of six needs help after crash paralyzes mom

GENEVA — After a head-on collision in February left Shirley Dishong paralyzed from her belly button down, she and her husband came to Ashtabula County for help.

The Dishongs stood at the intersection of Route 534 and Route 84 with signs explaining the situation and asking for work, size four diapers, wipes and food Wednesday. The family is from Newton Falls  and has four children, ages four, five, 16 and 17.

On Feb. 23, Shirley was hit by a drunk driver on State Route 225. She said the other driver “was passing on a hill and hit us dead on.” She said her spine was broken at T10 and T11.

“Four doctors have told me that I’ll never walk again,” Shirley said. “I try to keep my hope up, but I don’t want to be let down either.”

Jon Dishong, Shirley’s husband, lost his job after the accident, Shirley said. “Everything was fine before the accident. Everything just went bad since then,” she said.

Shirley said she is waiting on disability, and that they “came out here to fill out applications because there’s no work where we live. We hoped that the people who are able to help us would.”

Their electricity has been off for more than 25 days, Shirley said, and they “just need a few hundred dollars more to get it turned back on.”

“We would really appreciate any help anyone can give us,” she said. The Dishongs can be reached at (330) 281-7881 for those who would like to help. Donations can be sent to Park Street Christian Church at 97 Park Street in Geneva.
