Thunder on the Strip bike rally ends one of its best years

GENEVA-ON-THE-LAKE— — Thunder on the Strip Bike Rally went out as loudly as it came in as the event came to an end Sunday.

“This has probably been one of our best years,” said event co-founder and owner of Goblin Custom Cycles, Dwayne Bennett. “(Saturday) we had wall-to-wall people. We had probably15-20,000 more than last year.”

The rally has been held at Geneva-on-the-Lake since Bennett and co-founder Jake Hummel started it seven years ago. “We planned the first one in six weeks,” said Bennett, “and we had five or 6,000 people.”

“We’re trying to extend the season — that’s why it’s the weekend after Labor Day every year,” he explained.

“It brings a lot of revenue into the county,” Bennett said. “A lot of the business owners on the strip really appreciate it, and it’s their biggest weekend.”

“We’re looking to make it bigger and better for next year,” he said. That notion was echoed by co-founder Hummel, who said they will be trying to find a bigger name for next year’s headliner band.

“Every year we learn a little more and try to improve on that,” said Hummel. Hummel and his wife, Stacy, own Sportsterz Bar and Grill.

“I definitely appreciate everyone who came out and supported us and without any trouble,” he said.

Hummel explained that the turnout was “definitely better” than last year. “I think the weather had a lot to do with it, though,” he added.

A biker who identified himself as Smiley from Windsor said that he was enjoying himself even though, “I’m not typically one to visit these events.”

“I work too much and I work too hard,” he said, “so I took my day off today. I’m taking a break from my normal routine. So many of my friends that ride are here.”

He added, “I don’t ride to go to these things. I ride to ride. I’m a biker. I don’t follow the crowd.”
