Felony charges await alleged copper thieves

CONNEAUT — Three Conneaut men, all Marshall Street residents, will appear in Conneaut Municipal Court next week on felony charges resulting from allegations they tried to steal copper pipes from a vacant Harbor Street house earlier this week, according to court records.

Bradley Crandall, 19, 163 Marshall St.; Daniel Rutter, 21, 172 Marshall St.; and Nicholas Sutley, 19, 163 Marshall St.; each have been charged with breaking and entering, a felony, as well as criminal damaging, a court spokeswoman said Friday. Rutter and Sutley have also been charged with possession of criminal tools (a felony), while Crandall has also been charged with obstructing official business (a felony), according to records.

The trio remains in city jail in lieu of bond, a court spokeswoman said.

Police were contacted around 12:28 a.m. Wednesday by a caller who reported men who were breaking into an empty house in the 300 block of Harbor Street, according to a report. Upon arrival, officers saw at least one man inside the building. Upon investigating, three men were found inside the house, according to a report. The men — later identified as Crandall, Rutter and Sutley — had already removed a “large” amount of copper plumbing and were found with “criminal tools,” police said.
