Charges pending after Ashtabula woman shoplifts items used in meth labs

JEFFERSON — A 34-year-old Ashtabula woman is facing charges after she was arrested, Wednesday, for shoplifting items used to manufacture methamphetamine.

Deputy Scott Daniels was monitoring pseudoephedrine sales, using a computerized system, in the parking lot at Drug Mart in Ashtabula Township Wednesday when the woman purchased a nasal decongestant containing pseudoephedrine, according to the sheriff’s report.

Daniels recalled seeing the woman’s name in the system and looked further into her past pseudoephedrine purchases. The report showed that between Dec. 2010 to present, the woman had purchased the drug 53 times and had been blocked from purchasing it on four different occasions because she would have been over her 9 gram limit per month, according to the report.

Daniels attempted to conduct an investigative traffic stop, but was unsure which vehicle the woman had entered and was unable to do so, according to the report.

A short time later, Daniels was dispatched to K-Mart, 3315 North Ridge Road E. in Ashtabula Township for a female shoplifter in custody. When Daniels arrived, the female was identified as the same woman he was looking for, according to the report.

She was observed concealing four packs of AAA lithium batteries, also commonly used in the manufacture of methamphetamine, and walking past several open registers while failing to pay for them, according to the report.

Daniels advised the woman she was in possession of two components utilized in the manufacture of meth and would be charged accordingly at a later date, according to the report.

Several other items used in the manufacture of meth were recovered from the woman’s vehicle as well, according to the report.

She was issued a court summons to appear in Ashtabula Municipal Court on a petty theft charge for shoplifting and Daniels forwarded a copy of his report to the Ashtabula County Prosecutor’s Office requesting a direct indictment for the meth charges, according to the report.

The woman was released at the scene.
