City of Ashtabula plans to have Tire Amnesty Day March 29

ASHTABULA — The City of Ashtabula will host a Tire Amnesty Day on March 29 to help residents dispose of scrap tires.

The Tire Amnesty Grant Program, administered by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Recycling and Litter Prevention, helps Ohio's local governments develop programs to promote sustainable scrap tire collection drives, sponsor tire drop-off efforts and participate in targeted clean-up events.

Mary Church, project administrator in the Department of Planning  and Community Development, wrote the grant and secured the  money for the city’s Sanitation Department.

The city received $10,000 to aid in the removal of scrap tires, City Manager Jim Timonere said.

Ashtabula residents will be able to bring up to 10 passenger tires to the city’s transfer station and dispose of them for free from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 29 at the transfer station at 501 W. 24th St.

Participants must provide proof of residency with an ID or utility bill bearing their city address. If a resident have more than 10 tires, the additional tires can be disposed of at a cost of $3 per tire without a rim and $5 per tire with a rim, said Dom Iarocci, superintendent of public services.

The transfer station also will be open during this time if residents have bulk items they would like to dispose of, Timonere said. Normal dumping fees will apply.

For  more information, contact the Department of Sanitation at (440) 993-8101.
