Arrest made in Hague Road fire

Suspicious circumstances led officials to rule the fire as arson

JEFFERSON — The Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Department has made an arrest in the arson investigation of a Hague Road property.

Lt. Terry Moisio said one suspect is in custody awaiting arraignment. The suspect, whose name is being withheld pending charges, is set to be arraigned on Monday.

Authorities were trying to locate the suspect for questioning after a fire destroyed a detached garage at 2947 Hague Road, in Orwell Township, Wednesday night.

Suspicious circumstances surrounding the fire led officials to rule the fire as arson.

ACSO dispatch received the initial report of the fire just before 10 p.m. The caller gave a name and call-back number to the dispatcher; however, the name that was given, was not actually the person who called to report it, according to the sheriff’s report.

The dispatcher misunderstood the caller and dispatched the call to a Hyde Road address in Hartsgrove Township.

When multiple 911 calls began coming in for the Hague Road fire, the dispatcher attempted to reach the original caller; however, the person who answered the phone was not the person who made the call, according to the report.

The original caller gave the dispatcher the correct name for the phone number he provided, but it was not his own information, according to the report.

A passerby was able to provide ACSO with a possible vehicle description for the suspect. A small gray vehicle was observed parked in the roadway in front of the property with its lights off prior to the fire. The passerby told a dispatcher he noticed what looked like flashlights in the area of the garage, according to the report.

The garage was a total loss with several items of value, including a lawn tractor, log splitter, pallet of new roofing shingles and shop tools and machinery, inside, according to the report.
