Snow and sleet forecast for Ashtabula County as onset of spring fails to shift bad weather

Keep your snow shovels handy, there will be no relief in the bad weather over the weekend with occasional flurries and sleet expected in Ashtabula County.

In the past three days, the county received anywhere from 6- to 13 inches of snow, with Mother Nature dumping most of the white stuff on the northeast corner, according to meteorologists at the National Weather Service in Cleveland.

On Friday morning, eight inches of lake-effect snow combined with slushy roads prompted Pymatuning Valley Local Schools officials in Andover to call off school, said Brian Stevens, treasurer for the district.

Schools in northern Trumbull County also closed for the day, but all other Ashtabula County schools had class, according to school officials.

Folks hoping for a sign of spring-like weather will be disappointed because more flurries are expected today with highs reaching only 33 degrees, according to the National Weather Center in Cleveland.

Sunday will be about the same with a 20 percent chance of precipitation, including some sleet mixed with snow, according to the NWC.

Even so, employees at the Dairy Queen at 1550 W. Prospect Road, Ashtabula, say they are still serving customers dairy treats.

“People still like their ice-cream,” employee Lisa Olsen said.

People aren’t the only ones looking for a snack in the cold weather.

Mark Meyer, owner of the Bird Feeder, 1484 Route 46, Jefferson, says he’s having a better season than last year when temperatures where in the 80’s.

“We have a lot more birds this year,” he said. “With the snow cover, the birds certainly are eating more.”
