Conneaut man struck by train identified

JEFFERSON — The Conneaut man struck and killed by a CSX train in Geneva on Sunday has been identified by the Ashtabula County coroner’s office.

The victim is Jeffery Alan Janosek, 41, Richard Mongell, chief investigator for the coroner’s office, said Monday. Cause of death was “blunt trauma to the head, trunk and extremities,” he said.

The incident occurred around 1:45 p.m. at an underpass in the vicinity of the UH Geneva Medical Center, Mongell said. Janosek was pronounced dead at the scene about 20 minutes later, Mongell said.

The victim was walking east on the tracks when the freight train approached from behind, according to reports.

“The train blew its whistle and he continued walking on the tracks,” Mongell said Sunday. “The train blew the whistle again but he didn’t move and he was struck from behind.”

It’s not immediately known why Janosek didn’t acknowledge the approaching train, officials said. He was walking from Painesville at the time, Mongell said Monday.
