Miss Grapette turns an elegant 50 years old

GENEVA — Miss Grapette turns an elegant 50 years old this year, and pageant director Chrissy Jeppe is doing all she can to celebrate Ohio’s purple queen.

“We want this year to be the biggest year ever for the JAMboree and for Miss Grapette. We have a lot of special things planned,” she said.

The 2013 Miss Grapette and her court will get commemorative crowns.

“The tiaras are brand new!” she said. “I have been working on them since October. They are big and very special to me. We were so excited when they finally arrived in late April. We sat at the table opened them and the ‘oohs’ and ‘ahhhs’ made a fun moment for us.”

The queen of grapes will also receive a custom sash for the 50th court.

“The sashes are completely different too,” Jeppe said. “Miss Grapette will also be crowned with a brand new cape this year. All of this is very special for the pageant and for the girls.”

The pageant will be held Sept. 21 at Geneva High School.

Applications for the pageant are now being accepted through Sept. 11, Jeppe said, and girls registered before Aug. 23 will be included in the commemorative Miss Grapette souvenir book. The book will include pictures of all former Miss Grapette queens and all contestants in the 2013 pageant.

“Pre-sale is the only way to guarantee you receive a copy,” Jeppe said. “So don’t wait.”

For more information on the pageant, to place an advertisement in the souvenir book or to order a book, email www.missgrapette@yahoo.com. To sponsor the festival, go to www.genevagrapejamboree.com. To keep up with pageant news, search for “Miss Grapette Pageant” on Facebook.

Jeppe said out-of-town judges will score the pageant, just to be sure everything is done fairly.

Jeppe said the girl who gets the purple crown will hold a special place of honor in Geneva history.

“She is a very lucky lady! She will gain another family, become part of history, her picture will be displayed amongst 49 other very special ladies. I just hope whoever wins this title really enjoys it and has a lot of fun representing the Grape JAMboree and Geneva,” she said.

Festival organizer Crystal Johnson-Bradbury is also organizing the annual queen’s brunch for the ladies. To complete this event, Bradbury is inviting all former Miss Grapettes to attend.

“Crystal has been very successful in finding our queens and she has just four ladies left to find. If anyone knows these ladies, please let them know Geneva is looking for them!”
