Tradition draws thousands to Kingsville Township lawn sale

KINGSVILLE TOWNSHIP — Parking spaces disappeared quickly Saturday morning as crowds began to gather for the 39th Annual Kingsville Lawn Sale.

For one day each year, the village green becomes a place to meet, greet and look for a bargain.

The lawn sale began as a fundraiser for children’s programs at Kingsville Public Library, said Mariana Branch, who is director of the library. The purpose remains the same 39 years later.

“We have 115 vendors,” said Branch of the growth in those providing a variety of merchandise.

“Typically there are between 3,000 and 4,000 people (depending on the weather),” Branch said. Each person pays $1 to get in to the grounds, she said.

“I think I’ve been doing this (volunteering) for 35 years,” said Doris Silvieus while taking a break from working the ticket booth.

The lawn sale is held the third Saturday of May every year so people have time to adjust their schedule, Branch said. She said the event is almost like a community reunion

“I’ve had people come (back) from Florida,” Silvieus said.

There is a little of something for everyone as food vendors quench the hunger of visitors while various craft tables provided everything from hand bags to small quilts.

Kingsville Township resident Duane Dubsky brought his grandson Cooper Dubsky, 3 of Geneva, to the event.

“We always come. We really think this is a slice of Americana,” Dubsky said.

“This is one of our bigger years,” Branch said of the 115 vendors that included artists, photographers and area service organizations.
