Plymouth Township exploring construction of new road department garage

PLYMOUTH TOWNSHIP — It may take a year or two and some planning, but township trustees are looking at building a new road department garage on the former Plymouth School property.

“No plans for the property have been finalized, but preliminary floor and plot plans for possible use of the property by the road department have been drafted,” said Maryann Stevenson, fiscal officer.

The Ashtabula Area City School Board sold the 13.4 acres at 1002 Plymouth Road to the township in May of 2012 for $19,000, according to the agreement. The sale included playground equipment, a flagpole and the school’s sign. Each party paid half of the closing costs, according to the agreement.

The property is across from the Plymouth Fire Hall and the fire department and next door to Plymouth Methodist Church.

At the time of the sale, trustee Kevin Presley said the property held sentimental value to many township residents because it was once owned by the Plymouth Local School District. It wasn’t until 1957, during the consolidation, that it became part of the Ashtabula Area City Schools District.

Plymouth Road Superintendent Mike Wayman said the garage on Carson Road no longer serves the road department efficiently or safely.

Prior to the construction of the fire department and community room on Plymouth Road in 1970, the road and fire departments were housed on Carson Road. The road department was housed in the back of the building, and when the fire department was formed, the township added on to the front.

In 1976, the township built the metal building on Carson Road to house a road grader. As the years have passed, larger and additional equipment has been purchased to maintain the township’s roads and ditches.

The current road department facility does not meet building codes or a source of water, nor can it be heated efficiently, Wayman said.
