No hurry to hire a law director, says Conneaut city manager

CONNEAUT — Conneaut City Manager Tim Eggleston won’t launch a search for a new city law director for a few more months, he said Friday.

Last month David Schroeder stepped down as Conneaut’s law director when he became Ashtabula County’s Western County Court judge. State law prohibits him from holding both positions simultaneously.

At the time, Eggleston said he would appoint a committee to help him find Schroeder’s replacement. Carly Prather, assistant law director, is overseeing the law department on an interim basis.

Last month, City Council hired Schroeder to handle legal details related to Conneaut’s participation in the Move Ohio Forward program that provides money to demolish dilapidated and dangerous buildings. Council said Schroeder’s familiarity with the program factored into their decision. The Western County judgeship is a part-time position, meaning Schroeder can take on other work.

Eggleston said he won’t begin examining the law director position until Schroeder completes his work on the Move Ohio Forward program, which could wrap up sometime this summer. With no pressing or serious legal issues facing the city, there’s no real hurry, he said.

“Carly is doing a real good job,” he said. “She’s staying on top of stuff.”

Eggleston said he has some ideas he’d like to explore regarding the law office. “I think there may be some other options, too,” he said.

When the time does come to act, Eggleston has some interested candidates. Three people have already contacted him regarding the job, he said.
