Tree planted to honor Febel

JEFFERSON — Jefferson village and school officials gathered at Jefferson Area High School Friday afternoon to celebrate Arbor Day and plant a tree in honor of retiring Police Chief Steve Febel.

The event was organized by the high school’s Green Team Environmental Club. A crowd of village and school officials, as well as students, attended the planting of a red oak tree.

A 1976 JAHS graduate, Febel first worked as a bus driver and bus mechanic before becoming a law enforcement officer, and eventually, chief of police. He also coached a variety of sports for Jefferson, including football, softball, and girls’ basketball.

“For his time and talent, and for keeping the children and the community safe, we gather to honor Chief Febel,” Superintendent Douglas Hladek said. “A mighty red oak tree, donated by the village, will now stand on a hill overlooking the junior/senior high school to stand guard as a symbol of Steve’s mighty presence and care for our school.”

Dylan Dean, Green Team president, served as the master of ceremony for the event. The environmental club studied some of the reasons why trees are planted, including trees conserve energy, help clean the air, bring birds close, help clean rivers and streams and fight global warming.

Cake and punch was served in the cafeteria after the event.
