Dorset woman found guilty of hiring hitman will learn sentence next month

JEFFERSON — A Dorset woman found guilty of trying to arrange the murder of her late husband’s first wife will learn her punishment next month, according to  Ashtabula County Common Pleas Court records.

Angel Brown is scheduled to be sentenced at 11 a.m. Oct. 8 in the courtroom of Judge Ronald Vettel, according to the court’s website. In August, a jury needed only two hours to find Brown guilty of two counts of conspiracy to commit aggravated murder. Sentencing awaited the completion of an investigation conducted by the court’s probation department.

The maximum possible sentence is three to 11 years behind bars, officials have said. Brown is being held in the Ashtabula County Jail.

She was found guilty of hiring a friend to kill or arrange the killing of Lisa Luke of Ashtabula back in January 2012. Luke was the first wife of Brown’s husband, who was killed in a traffic accident in November 2011.

Prosecutors said Brown was upset that she was legally obliged to add two of Luke’s children to a wrongful death lawsuit Brown had initiated stemming from her husband’s death. Brown paid the acquaintance $4,000 to arrange the murder, according to testimony. However, the man — after spending the money — shared details of the plot with Ashtabula County William Johnson.

Detectives, using microphones and video cameras, caught Brown saying — on different occasions — she didn’t want to be implicated in the crime and that the body needed to “disappear,” according to testimony.

Brown testified she was merely joking with the friend and the whole episode was a big misunderstanding.
