Four escape Madison Township house fire

MADISON TOWNSHIP — A family of four escaped a fire that engulfed their home early Thursday morning, according to reports.

Firefighters and equipment from a half-dozen departments battled a blaze that caused extensive damage to 6812 Middle Ridge Road, said Gene Lutz, Madison Fire District chief. “There’s a good possibility it’s a total loss,” he said.

Units were dispatched around 1 a.m., and arrived to find the two-story, wood frame home fully involved in fire and smoke, Lutz said. “The whole front of the house, both floors, was on fire,” he said.

The fire apparently started outside, but the cause so far is undetermined, Lutz said. Because the fire may have started outdoors, a dog trained in arson cases was brought to the scene, he said. Results were negative, Lutz said.

An estimated $80,000 was done to the building and contents, he said.

A woman awoke to the smell of smoke and alerted the rest of the household, Lutz said. A man in the house suffered an injury escaping the fire and was taken to a hospital for treatment, he said. Two children were also in the house, Lutz said.

A dog died in the fire and a pet lizard is missing, Lutz said.

Assisting at the scene were an estimated 22 firefighters from Madison, Perry, Leroy, Thompson and Geneva. No firefighters were injured, Lutz said.

Madison Fire District personnel spent upwards of five hours at the scene, Lutz said.
