Ashtabula gets new sanitation truck scale

ASHTABULA — Folks hauling their trash or recyclables to the Ashtabula City Transfer Station now weigh in on a new scale.

Workers spent Monday and Tuesday morning installing the scale, said Dom Iarocci, superintendent of public services.

At the Aug. 5 City Council meeting, council authorized the city manager to buy a new sanitation truck scale. Soon after, the city bought the digital motor truck scale from Brechbuhler Scales Inc. in Thompson.

The previous scale broke down and had to be replaced because of age and extensive use, City Manager Jim Timonere said.

Brechbuhler was the lowest responsible bidder at $47,785, he said. The money came out of the city’s sanitation equipment fund, city records show.

The city provides curbside trash for its residents for a monthly fee. It provides one pickup a week of trash with a combined limit of seven bags and three containers. The containers should be no more than 32 gallons.

Residents who need larger items picked up, should call the sanitation office at 993-8101 to schedule a pickup. A small fee will be charged based on weight of item disposed; thus, the need of the scale.

Tires can also be disposed at the transfer station for a disposal fee.

The recycling center at the transfer station is open to everyone in Ashtabula County, regardless of residency. Recyclables should be prepared ahead of time in loose, appropriate containers.

Do not put plastic bags full of recyclable items in any container, Iarocci said.

The recycling center will take cardboard, plastics, cereal boxes, glass, brown glass, green glass, aluminum cans, steel cans, newspapers, magazines, office paper and junk mail. The items should be placed bins and separated before coming to the center.

The transfer station is at 501 W. 24th St., and is open 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.
