Only one week left to cast an early ballot

JEFFERSON — Election Day is more than a week away, but plenty of Ashtabula County residents are getting a jump on the balloting.

The county’s Board of Elections reports an increase in the number of voters deciding to make their choices known in advance of Nov. 5. As of late Friday morning, some 2,200 people have filled out a ballot, said Carol Lovas, director.

“It’s been steady,” she said.

Based on response so far, the board could see upwards of 2,500 early ballots, Lovas said.

“That’s about what would be expected,” she said. “That would be normal.”

People may cast an early ballot via mail or vote in person at the election board office, 8 W. Walnut St., Jefferson. Since the procedure is considered absentee voting, an application must be filled out before a ballot is given. Voters may save time by filling out the application in advance. Applications may be found on the board’s website, electionsonthe.net or can be mailed to the voter upon request.

The board office will be open for In-person voting 8:30-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m.-noon on Nov. 2, the Saturday before Election Day.

Completed absentee ballots may be mailed or hand-delivered to the election board office. Ballots must be received by 7:30 p.m. Nov. 5 to be counted.

This fall’s election features candidate races in cities, villages and townships, plus more than 40 issues, led by an county charter government initiative that would replace the three-member Board of Commissioners with an elected, seven-member council.
