Saybrook Township firefighters to hold a reverse raffle Oct. 5

SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP — The Saybrook Township Firefighters Association will host the Fourth Annual Reverse Raffle Oct. 5 at the former Kathryn Rose Community Center on North Bend Road.

The doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and dinner will be served at 7 p.m. A raffle and a DJ will follow, organizers said.

Donation of $50 per couple will be collected and checks can be made out to Saybrook Township Firefighters Association.

The Saybrook Township Fire Department, 5714 N. Ridge W., is led by Fire Chief John Jyurovat.

Established in 1929 with 15 volunteers and a used 1926 pumper, the department used a bell that was mounted to the roof of a garage that housed the fire truck to alert firefighters of a fire.

Once alerted to a fire, members of the department would go to the garage, ring the bell and drive the truck to the scene of the fire.

Today, the department boasts full- and part-time personnel and provides the following services: fire fighting, emergency medical,  water rescue, fire extinguisher training, carbon monoxide investigations, fire station tours, CPR training, and free blood pressure checks.

Fire services has three engines, two ambulances, one fire command vehicle and one grass truck.

Water rescue has one command vehicle and two personal watercrafts with trailer.
