Balloons to commemorate man missing for two years

CONNEAUT — Family and friends of Tim Rhodes will mark the two-year anniversary of his disappearance with a balloon launch early next month, relatives said.

Balloons will be sent into the sky at 2 p.m. Oct. 5, at Conneaut’s Township Park on Lake Road, according to Pat Rhodes, the missing man’s stepmother. He was last seen on that date in 2011.

Pat Rhodes, in an e-mail message, said she is hoping for a good turnout. “We want as many people as possible to come out for this to support the family,” she wrote.

The family held a candlelight vigil for Rhodes on July 2012 at a city park that was attended by dozens of people.

Rhodes, 53, was last seen by the person with whom he shared a house on Beaver Street, police said at the time. His personal belongings were left in the house, an indication he was not planning a move, officials said.

Also, Rhodes has not contacted anyone by phone, which is extremely out of character for the family-oriented man, relatives have said. A search of Rhodes’ neighborhood after he was reported missing turned up nothing, police said.

Officers check every tip and report as they arrive, Police Chief Charles Burlingham said Monday. Most recently, the Conneaut Police Department teamed with the Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Office to track a report that yielded no results, he said.

“(Leads) still come in,” Burlingham said. “We follow up on all of them.”
