A bit of the farm may come to Ashtabula's Main Avenue

ASHTABULA — Rich red tomatoes, bright green peppers and farm fresh eggs — this is what the Downtown Ashtabula Farmers’ Market envisions for Main Avenue.

Local farmers, bakers and the Amish will fill what is now an empty store with all the best homegrown and homemade goods they have to offer, come mid-June, organizer Tom Burris said Friday.

“The Downtown Ashtabula Farmers’ Market is part of the program to revitalize the downtown area,” he said. “It is our hope to copy the Westside Market in Cleveland with a year-round market offering local vegetables and produce.”

The group is working with Saving Ashtabula’s History Organization founder, Kris Hamrick, to open a new market in a store on Main Avenue.

“Local business owners really appreciate our effort and support us,” Burris said. “We will bring more people downtown.”

It will be an inside venue, open rain or shine.

“We are taking applications for both produce and craft items,” Burris said. “We hope to attract some of our Amish friends from around the region with their produce, as well as some of the Amish-made items.”

Plans are for the market to open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays, from mid June until late October.

Interested vendors should contact Burris at 855-7556 or email him at tom-burris@hotmail.com. The group also is on Facebook.
