Garden of the Month award will begin to bloom come June

ASHTABULA —  It’s time again to “root” for your favorite garden.

The Garden Trails Garden Club will present Garden of the Month awards this summer.

Anyone with a garden in Ashtabula can enter. Nominations can include varieties of flower gardens, wildflowers, rose gardens, herb gardens, water features and all other growers’ creations, according to the club’s members.

“The purpose, again this year, is to promote an interest in gardening with others in the community as well as encouraging  neighborhood revitalization on a small scale,” said Cheryl Sheer, contest chairwoman and member of the Garden Trails Garden Club.

Four or five  members of the Garden Club will pick the winner each month, beginning at the end of May. There will be three winners: June, July and August.

The winner will receive a certificate of recognition, as well as a gift certificate and a feature story and photo in the Star Beacon. Judging will be based on creativity and visual appeal.

“You may enter your garden or your neighbor’s garden,” Sheer said. “The only difference this year is that only one entry form is needed for the entire three months instead of entering every month.”

Last year’s winners were Sandra and Arnold Brown, Edward and Stephanie Edwards and Thomas and Marlene Sartini.

The Garden Club also leaves its fingerprint on the community with a flower show at the Elks Club. The show, which boasts high attendance, is held every two years to acquaint the community with floral design. Judges from Cleveland review the entries and choose the winners.
