Lakeside High School students to don billboard thanks to grant

SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP — It’s not every day high school students get to see themselves, or their classmates, on a billboard as they drive around town.

But that’s before Lakeside High School’s nurse, Juli Meaney, was awarded the Fuel Up to Play 60 grant worth nearly $4,000. The grant, designed to start a campus-based nutrition/fitness program, is sponsored by the National Dairy Council and the National Football League in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

To qualify for the grant, Meaney had to create a plan which empowered her students to make healthy choices for their personal health and wellness. Another requirement of the grant was to state how students would be rewarded for their participation.

"My goals were to increase student milk consumption and breakfast participation, contribute to the recycling project that’s already in place and sponsor an essay contest about healthy choices,” Meaney said.

For the rewards, Meaney bought Lakeside shirts, bracelets and sweatshirts.

“Then, an idea came to me about purchasing a billboard with some of the grant money featuring students who really went above and beyond,” she said. “When I spoke with the organization where the grant comes from, they loved the idea.”

Meaney encourages area motorists to keep their eyes open because it won’t be long now and they will see a billboard featuring a handful of Lakeside High School students sporting milk mustaches. They are Indy Cosme, Randy Soden, Keith Griffin, Brianna Kingston, Tony Schoren and Brandy Taggart as the Dragon mascot.

The Fuel Up Play 60 grant ended up paying for the entire cost of the billboard.
