Ashtabula County seeks grant for Chestnut Grove in Geneva State Park

JEFFERSON — Commissioners Dan Claypool and Joe Moroski on Tuesday approved a resolution that seeks funding for restroom rehabilitation in the Chestnut Grove area of Geneva State Park.

The board is making application to the Nature Works grant program of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR). The funding would be used to rehabilitate an existing public restroom that has been closed and thereby limited use of the park, which is to the east of the lodge.

The Convention Facilities Authority (CFA) pledged a 25 percent match for the grant, which has a maximum award of $30,000.

The rehabilitation is seen as a first step in making the area more appealing to lodge guests and the general public alike. The CFA is working with ODNR to re-plant the area with native hardwood trees and add amenities, such as picnic sites with grills. The authority also wants to build sidewalks to connect the grove to the lodge and improve an existing parking lot.

In other action, the board:

• Laid on the table for review three bids for upgrades to the Ashtabula County Water System telemetry project. Telemetry is used to remotely monitor and control water flow at various points in the system. Bids were received from firms in Burton, Akron and Toledo.

• Re-appointed Sandra Kanicki and David Hartz to the Ashtabula County Planning Commission. The members’ terms were to expire March 27 and will be extended to March 28, 2016.

• Approved an amendment to the Community Development Block Grant for fiscal year 2012. Commissioners last year implemented a pilot public transportation program in Conneaut and Geneva using Ashtabula County Transportation System (ACTS) vehicles. CDBG money was used for the pilot program, which produced dismal ridership numbers during its first five months of operation. The board scraped the program mid-year, which made $33,000 available for other CDBG projects.

Richmond Township requested the funding for a resurfacing project on Hall Road. A public hearing was held on the re-allocation of funds Tuesday afternoon and commissioners approved the amendment.
