Dick’s Sporting Goods’ donation means the return of freshman sports at Ashtabula Area Schools

SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP — Dick’s Sporting Goods has donated $42,000 worth of “Sports Matter” grants to the Ashtabula Area City School District, allowing the district to bring back five freshman sports.

The freshman sports on tap to return are: football, volleyball, girls’ basketball, softball and baseball, said Greg Zannelli, athletic director.

A grant for freshman boys basketball was submitted, but was not approved, Zannelli said.

“The money may only be used for the freshman sport that was awarded,” he said. “Any money not used must be returned after that sport’s season.”

The grants will be used to pay coaches, officials, transportation, workers for events, equipment and uniforms, he said.

The Board of Education Wednesday night approved a request to establish a fund called, Lakeside Freshman Sports Grant, and accept all of the grants from the Dick’s Sporting Goods Foundation.

Zannelli thanked Dick’s Sporting Goods, the community members who donated, Lakeside High School Principal Donald Rapose, former school board president Christine Seuffert, Head Football Coach Frank Hall, Head Volleyball Coach Jostalyn Krider, Head Baseball Coach John Anservitz and Junior Varsity Softball Coach Michelle Verdi.

In other business, the school board:

• Approved the 2014-15 student handbook;

• Heard a presentation from James Hood and Maureen Surbella about re-instituting a new elementary basketball program;

• Hired Kevin Welsh to fill the head wrestling coach position, and Robert McEndree, assistant varsity football coach, and Ryan McEndree, assistant freshman football coach. Angelo Velotta was hired as co-ed soccer coach for grades 7-8;

• Approved grades 6-8 science course of study, and

• Approved the service agreement between Ashtabula County Technical and Career Center through the Adult Basic and Literacy Education Program (ABLE) and the Ashtabula Area City Schools for the 2014-15 school year.
