Ashtabula County commissioners approve placing replacement levy for Senior Services on ballot

JEFFERSON — Ashtabula County commissioners, Tuesday, voted in favor of placing a 1.0-mill replacement levy for the Ashtabula County Senior Services Board on the November ballot.

The levy generates funds to maintain senior services in the county, including transportation, prescription drug assistance, in-home care, senior centers and protective services.

Commissioner Peggy Carlo said it is very important for voters to pass this levy as it benefits thousands of seniors in the county.

Commissioner Dan Claypool said the services provided through the levy are necessary for seniors to maintain the quality of life they deserve. He said it has been proven time and time again that it is less expensive to keep seniors in their homes rather than in a facility and the services provided with the levy are necessary to do so.

“It makes a lot of sense for taxpayers and seniors,” said Commissioner Joe Moroski. “It produces a better quality of life and a better standard of living.”

Commissioners also passed a resolution declaring it necessary to replace an existing .6-mill tax levy for the Ashtabula County Mental Health and Recovery Services Board in November.

In other business, commissioners approved:

• A resolution ordering publication and establishing goals for the Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) Program projections for the Ashtabula County Transportation System (ACTS); and,

• A resolution approving an equipment lease agreement with Xerox Corporation for a copier/scanner for the Ashtabula County Common Pleas Court Jury Commission.

Commissioners also approved financial transactions for the county including payroll changes for the Ashtabula County Department of Job and Family Services.
