Lots to see, do around the area this weekend

Fireworks, a parade and a glimpse into Ashtabula County’s past provide some of the diversions this red, white and blue weekend.

There’s plenty to do in the area besides grilling hot dogs and running through the sprinkler. Here’s some of the highlights:

It’s not the Fourth of July without fireworks, and two communities are offering shows tonight and Saturday.

At 10 p.m. today, Geneva-on-the-Lake will send skyward a display for the 30th straight year. The show will be held at the Geneva-on-the-Lake Golf Course, and is sponsored by the GOTL Kiwanis Club and Geneva Area Fireworks Committee.

Conneaut will light up the lake shore with a display that begins at 10 p.m. Saturday at Township Park on Lake Road. Viewing spots are available across the park, as well as the Port of Conneaut district and Lakeview Park.

All things mechanical are featured at the Ashtabula County Antique Engine Club’s 33rd annual show today through Sunday at the club grounds, 4026 Route 322 in Wayne Township. The show can be found about 3.5 miles east of the Route 11/Route 322 interchange.

A flea market, demonstrations and music will be featured, along with Youth Day events (1 p.m. today) and a garden tractor pull (5 p.m. today). The lineup also includes kiddie tractor pull (10 a.m. Saturday) and antique tractor pulls Saturday and Sunday. Suppers will be served tonight and Saturday night and food and refreshments will be available over the weekend.

Admission is a $5 donation. Members, exhibitors and kids under 12 are free.

Conneaut’s Fourth of July Festival at Lakeview Park hits the halfway point today, and much remains on the schedule.

A big parade begins at noon today. Units will stage at Depot Street, and grand marshal Chris Brecht will take the procession to the festival grounds via Depot, Broad and Erie streets. Music, including the final stages of the Dairy Queen Conneaut Idol competition, fill the final two days.

A block party will be held today at Geneva’s Memorial Field Park. The event, sponsored by Connect 534, features music by Myth and Company (11 a.m.-3 p.m.).

Luisa’s Mexican Restaurant will have a taco stand at the party and Geneva’s Giant Eagle store is providing watermelon for a 2 p.m. watermelon-eating contest. Cost to enter is $5..

Connect 534 is providing fresh lemonade and cornhole games will be played throughout the day.
