Ashtabula man slapped with multiple felony charges

Vincent J. Calvin was arrested in raid on Bonniewood apartment

ASHTABULA — The man Ashtabula police arrested on a warrant Saturday when they raided a Bonniewood apartment now faces nine felony charges, City Solicitor Michael Frank-lin said Thursday.

Vincent J. Calvin, 39, has been charged with one count of aggravated trafficking in heroin within a school safety zone, a first-degree felony; aggravated possession of heroin within a school safety zone, a second-degree felony; six separate counts of having weapons while under disability, third-degree felonies, and one count of possession of criminal tools, a fifth-degree felony.

Franklin said he’s waiting on a supplemental report, and if he receives it before Calvin’s preliminary hearing, the city solicitor said he also will file two counts of receiving stolen property, fifth-degree felonies.

Calvin’s trouble with local law enforcement began around 6 p.m. Saturday when, while seeking to arrest Calvin on a warrant from Michigan, officers with the Ashtabula Police Department became aware of the presence of drugs and weapons in the apartment he was occupying at 3129 Johnson Ct., which is within 1,000 feet of the Ashtabula Lakeside Elementary Campus on Wade Avenue.

Consent to search the apartment was obtained, with the result that more than 16 grams of what appeared to be heroin was located in the false bottom of an empty aerosol can, Franklin said. Six handguns, five of which were loaded, also were located in the apartment.

Later, record checks disclosed that Calvin had a felony drug conviction earlier this year and may not lawfully own or possess a weapon, Franklin said. Also, it turned out that two of the handguns had been reported stolen.

Calvin is incarcerated in the Ashtabula City Jail, according to the jail administrator. He will be scheduled for a preliminary hearing on his charges within 10 days.

“Possessing, manufacturing, or selling drugs in Bonniewood is a really bad idea with the elementary campus just down the road, it means persons engaging in this activity will experience enhanced penalties,” Franklin said. “Drug dealing is an inherently stupid activity; doing it near a school is a whole other level of stupid.”

Franklin also commended the Ashtabula Police Department for interdicting a significant stash of a highly dangerous drug and highly dangerous guns.

“The officers went above and beyond in this investigation and arrest, and they have made our community safer as a result,” he said. “To put this in context, most heroin possession cases involve less than half a gram. Five grams is considered a ‘bulk’ amount and 16 grams is a lump of heroin the size of a golf ball. I congratulate the officers for getting it off the street.”
