Conneaut council set to study rezoning for new campground

CONNEAUT — City Council will reportedly consider legislation next week that would alter Conneaut’s zoning ordinance to allow a second campground on Center Road.

An ordinance that would rezone about 50 acres of a 60-acre parcel on the west side of Center, opposite the rear of the Gateway Plaza shopping center, will be on Monday night’s regular agenda, according to reports. The news follows a City Council public hearing on the matter Tuesday night.

Neither City Manager Tim Eggleston or Council President Thomas Udell could be reached Wednesday for comment.

At issue is an application from city resident Gary Coxon, who sought a zoning change for the parcel from B-1 (highway business) to O-1 (recreational use). A strip of land that adjoins the road would remain zoned for business use under the proposal.

In May, Coxon told the city’s Planning Commission he was in “the preliminary stage of planning” for a campground. A zoning change was critical to the proposal’s future, he said. The land is located a short distance north of the Evergreen Lake Campground.

Only a handful of people turned out for the hearing and asked questions about the proposed campground’s impact on neighboring property, according to reports.

The Planning Commission signed off on the application two months ago and forwarded the application to council, the only entity empowered to change the city’s zoning map and ordinance. If council approves the legislation, the matter returns to the commission for additional review before final approval is given.

A measure amending fence restrictions contained the zoning code, also recommended by the Planning Commission, will also debut before council Monday, according to reports. A public hearing on the fence changes preceded the campground meeting.
