The 8th annual Zucchini 500 returns to Jefferson Farmers’ Market

JEFFERSON — The 8th annual Zucchini 500 zips into the Jefferson Farmers’ Market at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 20.

This yearly gourd racing championship returns to the smooth surface of St. Joseph’s parking lot in an attempt to break the current distance record of more than 46 feet.

Racers may bring an over-sized zucchini with them or buy one at the Market. The Market committee will supply the wheels as well as decorations to turn the squash into a thing of beauty.

Mounted on the wheels, the veggie will be launched down a ramp in an attempt to set new distance records.

The longest run and a runner-up in each of six age categories will be awarded Farmers’ Market cash vouchers.

The overall longest and shortest runs will also receive special recognition.

Come, join in the fun and keep the tradition alive.

The Jefferson Farmers’ Market is held each Saturday morning from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 32 E. Jefferson St., Jefferson.

Not only do customers have the opportunity to purchase the freshest produce available, they are able to meet the people who grow the produce and learn exactly how the fruits and vegetables were grown, harvested and held.

Developing this relationship means that a buyer can be sure of the quality of the food being purchased.

The market offers free recipes featuring ways to use the fresh foodstuffs at the market.

In an effort to spark local ingenuity, on Aug. 3, the Market will sponsor a Mr. or Ms. Veggie Contest with prizes going to the most creatively dressed vegetables.

In conjunction with the Jefferson Historical Society, the market will sponsor two food contests. During the society’s Corn Fest on Aug. 24, the Farmer’s Market will sponsor a corn muffin contest with the winning entry receiving $25 in cash vouchers.

The market will also sponsor an apple cookie contest as part of Apple Fest on Sept. 14. Again the winning entry will receive $25 in Farmer’s Market cash vouchers.

The Jefferson Farmer’s Market will close on Saturday, Oct. 12, with the traditional free apple cider.
