Cool treats and summer picnics planned for senior citizens

ASHTABULA — July brings the dog days of summer and at the Ashtabula Senior Center, that means lots of cool activities, a picnic and treats for senior citizens.

Here’s a list of the events:

— Shout “Bingo” on Mondays 1:15 to 3:30 p.m.

— It’s a big birthday party for July birthday people and it’s sure to be fun. Show up for cake at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Senior Center Community Room. Guests are welcome for a small donation. Sign up by Monday.

— A “Hole” lot of fun is planned at Allison’s Mini-Golf at Geneva-on-the-Lake. The van leaves the Senior Center at 1 p.m. Friday, July 19. Golf begins at 1:30 p.m. and refreshments at Eddie’s Grill after a game of miniature golf. Return to Ashtabula about 3:30 p.m. Cost is $4.50, Van ride is $2. Refreshments at Eddies is on your own. Need five people to ride in order for van to go.

— The Happy Travelers will be going to the  Presque Isle Casino July 24. Cost: $23. Depart at 4 p.m., return at 11 p.m.

— The Discussion Group will meet at 9 a.m. Monday. Refreshments serve while you talk about local issues.

— A nurse is available for your health questions 9-11 a.m. Thursdays.

— Coffee and donuts at 10 a.m. July 26 at the Senior Center, sponsored by Denise at Cardinal Woods.

— Alzheimer’s Caregiver Support Group meets the second Tuesday of the month at 5:30 p.m. in the community room of the Senior Center.

— Sit and Be Fit low-impact exercise class 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

— Ice-cream Social at 1:15 p.m. July 24 at Senior Center, sponsored by Lisa Demshar and Ducro Services. Ice-cream sundaes will be the treat. Then, on July 31 at 1:15 p.m., root beer floats will be served, sponsored by Carissa Callen and Saybrook Landing.

— Craft and Laughs with Danny from Carington Park at 1:15 p.m. July 25 in the upstairs boardroom at Senior Center — Back by popular demand!!!

— Senior Center picnic will be held 4-7:30 p.m. July 30 at Lake Shore Park. Bring a dish to share and a place setting. Food, games, entertainment and door prizes. Hot dogs and hamburgers provided by Crossroads Hospice. Beverage provided by Geneva Shores. Entertainment provided by Jefferson Health Care. A $1 donation appreciated.

— Movie and popcorn at 2:15 p.m. July 31. This month, “Enemy of the State,” a dynamic thriller starring Will Smith, Gene Hackman and Jon Voight.

— Are you age 60 and older and need prescription assistance? Call 998-6750.

— Get help with electricity bills this summer. Call your local Community Action at 1-866-223-1471.

— The second golf outing at Hemlock Springs Golf Course was fabulous with 45 golfers participating in the game. Congrats to the June winners! Two teams tied for first place with a score of 34. The first team was the Lockwood team, consisting of D. Lockwood, L. Carlson, J. Ambrose and R. Butcher. The second team was the Redline team. No names available.

The next golf outing is at 9 a.m. Thursday at Hickory Grove Golf Course in Jefferson. $18 per person covers nine holes of golf, cart, lunch, beverage and prizes. Call Lisa at 998-6750 to register.

— Don’t forget: Living history with D-Day Conneaut, Aug. 16-17.

— Save the date: All-county senior picnic will be held Aug. 23.
