Ashtabula sixth-grader draws all the presidents in charcoal

ASHTABULA — Sharon Beebe is very excited as one of her art students has taken great interest in the U.S. Presidents.

Levi Dubach, a sixth-grade student at Superior Intermediate School, first asked Beebe for extra homework to improve his skills and she was happy to oblige.

Then, he asked if he, along with a few friends, could join her at lunch for additional art time.

“I introduced him to various materials, including charcoal,” she said. “It was close to President’s Day and he said he wanted to draw a few portraits. I had no idea what all this would lead to!”

Levi captured every U.S. President — from Washington to Obama — with charcoal on white paper. The artwork is displayed throughout the hallways at Superior Intermediate School.

“I enjoy working with charcoal; I love the contrast,” he said. “I don't see it as a lot of work because I enjoy art so much.”

Levi did most of the work at home.

“It's pretty messy but the end result was worth it,” he said.

Levi's parents, Larry and Karen Dubach, told Beebe that Levi has been drawing since he could hold a pencil, she said.

“I have always had great teachers,” Levi said. “Even teachers who don't teach art support my enthusiasm to draw.”

But Levi said his art teachers Mary Ann Leombruno, Tiffany Rossi and Beebe have really encouraged him and taught him how to follow his dreams and create art.
