Multi-Cultural Festival kicks off Friday evening with jazz concert in Ashtabula

ASHTABULA — The third annual Multi-Cultural Festival, sponsored by the Ashtabula Downtown Development Association (ADDA), is fast approaching. It takes place Saturday from noon to 9 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. in Lance Corporal Kevin M. Cornelius Park. On the agenda is an array of activities, games, food, and beverages, as well as a craft fair.


The ethnic food will include Jamaican jerk chicken, oxtail, fish, curry  chicken  patties,  curry  goat,

stew, Mexican food (Truck: Chipotle, curly fries), Puerto Rican cuisine (Alcapurrias, rellenos, potato balk, pastelillos, tropical beverages), Hawaiian food, Vegan food, sausages of the world, and pulled pork. Other offerings will include sausage and ribs, kettle corn, hot dogs, burgers, fries, veggies, chicken,  funnel fries, nachos, chips, lemonade and iced tea.


There will be a variety of merchandise and services, including:

• Beach glass jewelry

• Handmade crafts by Columbian artists

• Bath/ beauty, massage products

• Herbal products by Maria

• Hungarian pastries by Kati

• Jewelry

• Sunglasses

• Hair braiding

• Face painting

Sidewalk Chalk Art Competition

There will be 20 sidewalk spaces available for a chalk art competition for 17 and under age groups. The grand prize will be a two hour limo ride from Ducro’s. Second place will be two adventure zone passes. Each contestant will pay $5 per square for a competition entry fee.  

Passport Puzzle

Ten windows will have been decorated in a culture theme, and there will be 1,000 passports given out at the event with a phrase puzzle to solve.  The first 300 puzzles solved will get a free water bottle or bracelet and then will be entered into a grand-prize drawing.

Hawaiian Wedding Ceremony and Vow Renewal

On Saturday afternoon from 4:30 to 6 p.m., there will be a Hawaiian wedding ceremony, as well as a Hawaiian-themed renewal of wedding vows. Those interested in participating should contact Len Jury at or phone 440-964-2361 or 216-440-9019.

Other Activities

Among the other activities are cornhole, soccer goalie kicking, sponsored by the YMCA, as well as kids’ activities behind the gazebo. The first 1,000 people that check in on Facebook (type in “Annual Downtown Ashtabula Multi-Cultural Festival”) will receive Denman brushes donated by Proctor and Gamble. These brushes retail at $20.

To kick off the festival, there will be a performance by jazz pianist Bill Dobbins Friday at 7:30 p.m. at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. This is part of the 2013 St. Peter’s Fine Arts Series.
