Man walking country to make point on climate stops in Ashtabula County

ASHTABULA TOWNSHIP — A St. Louis man upset with the lack of government’s commitment to fight global climate change took to the roads this summer and plans to keep walking until he reaches Los Angeles.

David Henry hopes to interact with the American people regarding the subject of climate change along the way.

He took a laundry and breakfast break at the Edgewood Diner Friday morning where he reflected on the ups and downs of the trip before walking to Geneva-on-the-Lake.

“On June 8 I started from Boston Commons and have been doing about 18 miles a day,” said Henry who worked in the General Accounting Office in Washington for nine years before moving on to website design.

Henry pushes a cart with wheels trying to stay on backroads and trails. He said he will meet with his wife and two daughters next week.

“I’ve been frustrated by the lack of movement on climate change policy,” Henry said. He said his academic background includes an undergraduate degree in agriculture and a masters degree in public policy.

Henry has been using the trip to dialogue with people on the subject of global warming. He said very few people have bothered him concerning his views on the subject and almost everyone has treated him well while on the road.

“I think I’d rather have people come up and yell at me,” Henry said of the apathy. He said overall the trip has affirmed his view that people are basically good.

Henry said Democrat and Republican legislators seemed close to compromise on the subject in 2005 and 2006, but the 2010 mid-term elections reduced the chance of compromise.

“We seemed locked in that position which I find unacceptable,” he said.

Henry has walked more than 700 miles and is now heading south to Cincinnati on his way back to St. Louis and then on to Los Angeles on Route 66 if all goes as planned.
