Election board to decide status of ballots Tuesday

JEFFERSON — Ashtabula County’s Board of Elections will determine Tuesday how many provisional ballots from the Nov. 5 election should be added to the full and final count.

Since the election ended, workers have been verifying the eligibility of voters who cast a provisional ballot. Those ballots are used when eligibility is a question mark. People who can’t produce identification or show up at a different precinct, for example, fill out a provisional ballot.

The election board received 170 provisional ballots, and staff is double-checking them all to gauge their validity. The research will be done in time for the election board’s Tuesday morning meeting, Duane Feher, assistant director, said Friday.

Feher said he was unaware if any of the provisionals checked so far raised red flags.

Valid provisionals will be added to the 20,806 ballots already counted. The board will meet once more on Nov. 26 to certify the final numbers. At that point, the board will know if any recounts will be conducted. Recounts are held when totals are separated by less than one-half of 1 percent. Officials have said some recounts are possible.

Also to be added to the mix are a handful of absentee ballots that arrived by mail at the board office after the election. Ballots postmarked on or before Nov. 5 can be counted, officials have said.

Some 34 percent of the county’s 60,718 registered voters participated in the election, according to results.
