Plymouth Township man dies in backhoe accident

55-year-old Ronald Clutter was working in his yard

PLYMOUTH TOWNSHIP — A Garrison Road man, known as an avid outdoorsman, died in a backhoe accident while working in his yard Wednesday night, authorities said.

Ronald Clutter, 55, was killed in the accident around 8:30 p.m., Ashtabula County Coroner Pam Lancaster said.

“He was observed by his family at 8 p.m., but when the family went to check on him (about a half-hour later) he was pinned behind the bucket and other equipment,” she said. “The family tried CPR, but his injuries were severe.”

Plymouth Township Fire Department and ambulance service responded to the 911 call to 713 Garrison Road, assisted by Sheffield Township, according to dispatcher reports. He was transported by ambulance to Ashtabula County Medical Center.

Clutter’s cousin, Plymouth Township resident Tom Lucas, said Clutter enjoyed the outdoors, especially deer hunting and running his coonhounds.

“We used to hunt and trap together,” Lucas said. “I got my first coonhound from him.  He taught me a lot of what I know about the outdoors. He was a good person.”

Arnold Schulte Jr., one of Clutter’s good friends, said they always had a lot of fun together.

“We trapped beaver together,” he said. “We went deer hunting at his dad’s place ... That’s the first time I got a deer.”

Schulte, who also lives in Plymouth Township, said Clutter was “super” and “always kidding around.” He feels terrible that his friend died so young, he said.

Clutter worked many years at Perfection Corp in Geneva, and the past two years at Arthur Louis Steel Co. in Ashtabula. He is survived by his wife, Janice, and their two sons.

Autopsy results are pending from the Cuyahoga County Coroner’s Office, Lancaster said.
