Purse contents have Jefferson woman facing five felony charges

JEFFERSON — A Jefferson woman authorities say was trying to take  $19 worth of merchandise from an Ashtabula Township store Thursday faces prison time when narcotics were found in her purse, according to the Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Office.

The 23-year-old woman faces five felony charges when deputies discovered heroin, methamphetamine and tools used to package and distribute drugs in her purse, according to a report. She also faces a theft charge, deputies said.

Deputies were called to the Discount Drug Mart in the township around 4:30 p.m. Thursday to deal with a suspected shoplifter. Store security personnel said the woman tried to take fake fingernails and a handbag without paying, according to a report. While checking her purse, security employees discovered suspected drugs, deputies said.

In addition to the narcotics, deputies found in the purse a small digital scale, rubber bands, plastic bags and a razor blade — all items commonly used in the drug trade, according to a report. The woman freely admitted she uses and sells drugs to make a living, deputies said.

The woman was taken to county jail, deputies said. Tests conducted at the sheriff’s office confirmed the drugs were meth and heroin, according to a report.
