TI Dyno hosts Diesel Day to benefit children’s hospital

ASHTABULA — The Earth trembled under TI Dyno in Ashtabula as diesel trucks showed off horsepower in dull roars and clouds of black exhaust.

For Nick May of Suffield, Ohio, the thick smog was the smell of success.

“I’ve put some real money into this truck,” May said of his 1196 Dodge Ram. “I basically put all my money into this because this truck is my toy.”

With a modified engine, upgraded transmission and a charger full of power, May said he had specific goals for his white diesel truck, and he traveled nearly two hours to test his toy against the other super-charged vehicles.

TI Dyno, owned by vehicle customizer Kevin Cragon, hosted more than 23 trucks for the Diesel Dyno Day to benefit Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital.

Gear heads pay to put their diesel trucks on the “Dyno-meter” to test the limits of the truck’s horsepower and torque. The event was sponsored by Grand Rock Power Flow Division of Painesville, which builds exhaust stacks.

Cragon said he hoped to raise more than $1,300 for the hospital, with prizes that included most horsepower, most torque and worst horsepower.

“The guy with the worst horsepower needs the prize the most,” he quipped.

Cragon, who sells parts, customizes vehicles and installs the upgrades, also performs electronic and manual tune-ups.

“Our Diesel Days are a lot of fun,” he said. “We are able to have a good time and test trucks against other trucks and raise money for a good cause.”
