Weather creates hazardous driving conditions

A sudden nosedive in temperatures created slippery roads that resulted in a number of traffic crashes Tuesday afternoon and evening, according to reports.

Snow that also arrived Tuesday, whipped by strong winds, added to the region's driving dilemma.

Fire and police stations in many communities were reporting crashes Tuesday evening, although none appeared to be serious. Two were reported in Saybrook Township, one of which was hampering traffic on a stretch of Route 84.

No details were immediately available.

Asked about conditions on Interstate 90 and Route 11, an Ohio State Highway Patrol said "There's nothing to report."

A Tuesday that saw temperatures near 40 degrees at the start began to disintegrate as the hours passed. By mid-afternoon, temperatures were starting to drop and snow — pushed by strong winds —  began to drift across highways.

By mid-evening Tuesday, temperatures were hovering around 20 degrees.

Conditions won't improve much today, according to the National Weather Service. High temperatures won't exceed 26 degrees and upwards of three more inches of snow is expected, forecasters said.

Winds will continue to be strong, sometimes gusting to 40 mph, according to the NWS. Snow showers are expected tonight, along with temperatures in the teens.

Despite Tuesday's strong winds, few Illuminating Company customers reported power outages, according to the utility's website.

Less than five outages were reported, and they were concentrated in an area of Trumbull Township that includes portions of Footville Richmond Road and Route 534.
