A stubborn fire in the floor of the Chestnut Street Cafe caused approximately $5,000 in damage early Saturday morning, said Conneaut Fire Department Assistant Chief Steve Sanford.
“When we got there the building was full of smoke,” Sanford said. He said it took awhile to find the origin of the fire in a crawl space between floor joists.
He said the fire was called in at 7:44 a.m. at the Chestnut Street Cafe at 399 Chestnut Street.
“There was about $5,000 in structural, wiring and smoke damage,” Sanford said. He said the staff of the cafe left the building at about 1 a.m. Saturday.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation,” Sanford said. He said the Ohio Fire Marshall’s Office only gets involved if there is a fatality, suspected arson or a large dollar amount of damage to a structure and its contents.
He said firefighters from Conneaut battled the blaze and were on the scene for about two and a half hours. Sanford said Ashtabula Township came as mutual aide, but were turned around when they arrived because the fire was under control.
