New traffic light project gets green light from Ashtabula City Council

ASHTABULA — The Ohio Department of Transportation soon will be replacing the city’s old, outdated traffic signals with new lights, City Manager Jim Timonere said.

City Council passed an ordinance Monday night authorizing Timonere to enter into a $90,273 contract with Glaus, Pyle, Schomer, Burns and Dehaven, Inc., of Akron for inspection, bidding and on-site work. The project costs will be taken from the city’s permanent improvement fund.

ODOT will pay for 80 percent, or about $770,000, of the total cost of the traffic light project, estimated to be $907,232, said Justin Chesnic, spokesperson for ODOT, District 4.

The new traffic lights will go up at 12 intersections, he said.

Those intersections are: Lake Avenue and West Ninth Street, Columbus Avenue and West 23rd Street, West 19th Street and West Avenue, Lake Avenue and West 24th Street, Lake Avenue and West 26th Street, Lake Avenue and West 32nd Street, Prospect Road and Lake Avenue, Station Avenue and Prospect Road, Seymour Drive and Prospect, West Avenue and Prospect, Prospect and Woodman, and Bunker Hill Road and Jefferson Road.

Motorists traveling to the new Dollar General at Benefit Avenue and Prospect Road will notice a new traffic light, but it’s not part of the ODOT project.

The cost was $45,411 and that was the lowest bid, Timonere said.

The good news is Dollar General agreed to pay $10,000, he said.

The Benefit Avenue intersection gets a lot of traffic in the morning and afternoon when the factories let out and, although expensive, Timonere said city officials believed a new light was necessary.
