Suspect is multiple robberies sought by law enforcement

JEFFERSON — The Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a series of attempted robberies and an aggravated burglary that occurred Friday evening and appear to be connected.

An attempted robbery occurred at the Family Dollar store in the Saybrook Plaza at about 7:33 p.m. A second attempted robbery of a female customer’s purse in the parking lot at K-Mart in Ashtabula Township was reported at about 7:47 p.m. Additionally, at about 8:05 p.m. a Columbus Avenue resident reported an attempted break-in to her home through a window, said Lt. Terry Moisio.

ACSO was called to Family Dollar after a suspect reportedly walked into the store and demanded money from the cashier. The suspect reportedly claimed to have a weapon, however, did not brandish a firearm, Moisio said.

The cashier told the deputy the suspect made it appear that he had a weapon by placing his hand under his shirt pointing his finger, or an object, according to the Sheriff’s report.

The suspect reportedly left the store on foot when customers began entering the store. No money was stolen and no vehicle was seen, according to the report.

A deputy was in the area when the report came in and was on scene within minutes, however, the suspect was not located, according to the report.

A short time later, a second attempted robbery was reported. A female customer was approached in the parking lot as she was walking back to her car with a cart full of groceries, Moisio said.

The suspect approached the female stating, “Don’t say a work, give me your purse,” according to the report.

The female stated the male suspect had his hand under his shirt as if he was holding a gun, but no firearm was brandished. The woman reportedly turned her shopping cart around and walked back into the store without relinquishing her purse. She was not injured, according to the report.

Deputies then received a report of a break-in at a home on Columbus Avenue. An unidentified male reportedly attempted to enter the home through a window. A female resident of the home heard a noise, yelled and saw a white male exit the enclosed front porch of the home. The suspect fled north through the yard, according to the report.

The suspect did not take any property and left without incident.

The descriptions of the suspect, given by the victims, are similar and authorities believe the same person is responsible for all three incidents, Moisio said.

“We’re assuming its the same individual given the time frames and the descriptions,” he said.

The suspect is described as being a white male, short stature and medium build with dark hair and a receding hairline. He was wearing dark colored clothing and dark-rimmed glasses. The suspect is believed to be driving a silver Chevrolet HHR that was identified through K-Mart’s surveillance video. The license plate on the vehicle is unknown, Moisio said.

The suspect is believed to be 30 to 40 years of age and about 5-foot 2-inches to 5-foot 5-inches tall.

Anyone with information regarding any of these incidents is asked to call Det. Bryan Rose at 440-576-3515. Deputies are continuing to investigate these crimes.
