State medical board revokes doctor’s license

ROCK CREEK — The state medical board has permanently revoked Dr. Waheed Malik’s license to practice medicine and surgery in the state of Ohio.

The board met Thursday, in an emergency meeting, and voted to accept the permanent surrender of Malik’s medical license. Malik was in violation of a section of the Ohio Revised Code for failure to conform to minimum standards of care, according to a statement issued by the state medical board.

The ORC states the medical board reserves the right to revoke a license for “failure to conform to minimal standards of care of similar practitioners under the same or similar circumstances, whether or not actual injury to a patient is established.”

Malik was charged with one count of felony gross sexual imposition, and one count of unlawful restraint, a misdemeanor, after a patient made a formal complaint with the state medical board alleging improper sexual contact by the doctor. He pleaded not guilty to both charges during an arraignment last week in Ashtabula Municipal Court.

Additional charges are forthcoming, said Det. Greg Leonhard, of the TAG Law Enforcement Task Force.

Malik, of 1034 Lake Road, Conneaut, waived a preliminary hearing and was released on a personal recognizance bond. The case has been bound over to an Ashtabula County Grand Jury.

Leonhard said since Malik’s arrest on April 25, additional people have come forward in Ashtabula and Trumbull counties and authorities are in the process of investigating those reports.

Malik practiced in Trumbull County prior to being hired by University Hospitals back in February.

Leonhard said TAG officials are working with the Trumbull County Prosecutor’s Office on obtaining subpoenas.

Malik was serving as a primary care physician at University Hospital’s Ashtabula Primary Care office, 1184 Lake Ave., in Ashtabula. He was terminated by UH immediately following his arrest.

Malik, who is Board Certified in internal medicine and nuclear cardiology, has been listed as one of America’s Top Physicians.

He practiced in Maryland for 14 years prior to coming to northeast Ohio.
