Mother arrested after child found wandering

ROCK CREEK — A local mother was arrested after her five-year-old child was found wandering around the neighborhood alone, and this is not the first time it’s happened.

The 23-year-old woman is being charged with child endangerment.

The Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Department was called to Rock Creek Elementary School Friday afternoon after a teacher found the child on school property. The child was reportedly dressed in pants and a T-shirt with no shoes or socks on. The teacher told deputies the child has been found on school property numerous times within the last few months, according to the Sheriff’s report.

It took deputies about 12 minutes to arrive at the school from the time the incident was reported and within that time period, no one had been out looking for the child, the report states.

The mother’s boyfriend arrived at the school at the same time a deputy arrived. He reportedly told the deputy the child’s mother has a hard time keeping him from leaving the residence and wandering off alone. He said she noticed the child was missing and sent him to the school to locate him, according to the report.

The deputy met with the mother at their High Street residence. She reportedly told the deputy she went to wake her boyfriend up for work and thought her mother was watching the child. The child’s grandmother told deputies she went to the restroom and the child left the residence, according to the report.

The mother told the deputy the child suffers from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and other mental health issues and needs to be watched 24 hours a day. The deputy reportedly told her she was an adult and should be responsible enough to keep track of her child, according to the report.

The residence is located about 200 yards from where the child was located on the school property and the child had to cross the street to get to the school, according to the report.

ACSO has been called to the residence five times over the past few months because the mother reportedly could not control the child. ACSO has also received numerous calls from Rock Creek Elementary School staff in the past few months because the child had wandered onto the school’s property, according to the report.

The mother told deputies Ashtabula County Children Services was recently involved, but the case was closed because they changed the locks on the house. The mother said she believes one of the doors was left unlocked and that is how the child got out, according to the report.

She was transported to Ashtabula County Jail.
