JEFFERSON — A man was taken from a fire scene at 977 Route 46 North on Saturday evening after fire seriously damaged the first floor of the home, said Jefferson Fire Department Assistant Chief Dave Locy.

Albert Howell, 76, of Jefferson was pronounced dead at the scene, said Chief Investigator with the Ashtabula County Coroner’s Office Rich Mongell. Howell, who reportedly lived alone, died of smoke inhalation, Mongell said.

The call came in around 8:30 p.m. Saturday, and firefighters from Jefferson, Ashtabula Township and Austinburg Township responded to the fire. Traffic was blocked on Route 46 for more than an hour as firefighters battled the blaze and cleaned up after the fire.

Locy said firefighters arrived on the scene and found a couch on fire in the front first floor room of the house.

There was significant structural damage to the first floor but there was limited damage to the second floor, he said.

As of press time Sunday, the cause of the fire is unknown and still under investigation, according to Jefferson Fire Department.
